In an exclusive with FOX Business’ “After the Bell” show yesterday, The Dwyer Group® CEO Dina Dwyer-Owens explained how increasing taxes and healthcare regulation place an added layer of complexity on already burdened small business owners, and how they are taking steps to innovate.

“For every dollar franchisees pay in additional taxes, that’s another dollar that they’re not able to reinvest in their business and create more jobs. We’re starving the goose that lays the golden egg of creating more jobs,” she explains. “However, our franchisees are resilient and are working to control what we can.”

In an age where a small business is becoming more and more difficult to manage independently, more and more independent business owners are looking into solutions such as joining a national franchise to stay competitive.

“We have folks coming to us day in and day out because business is already tough enough,” she says. “In fact, yesterday we kicked off our first day of training for the New Year. We have 50 folks in basic training in Waco, Texas, and many of them had already been in business 15, 20, and 30 years, but they’re searching for ways to make business easier.”

Although new healthcare regulations taking effect in 2013 will have an effect on larger franchises, Dwyer-Owens explains, most of the franchises under The Dwyer Group umbrella of brands– including The Grounds Guys®– can operate a successful business with less than 50 employees and relatively low startup costs in the service sector. In addition, each franchise is provided business training and coaching from a franchise consultant to help them determine how to stay compliant with new regulations, and if and when to hire.

The seven home-service franchises under The Dwyer Group added a total of 215 new franchise locations throughout the U.S. and Canada in 2012.
